CEOs at top companies like Amazon, Google, and Virgin are advising their leaders to ditch PowerPoint slides, full of hard to digest bullet points, in favor of sharing a story instead.
In fact, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, recently even went as far as to ban his executives from using PowerPoint slides altogether. In place of bullet points, Bezos requires his executives to write 6-page memos that he then has the team read for the first 3o minutes of the meeting prior to discussing questions and feedback as a team. A process he believes is far “more effective” than PowerPoint slides.
Why is this becoming such a hot trend in business?
Well, the answer dates back to the era when our ancestors discovered how to manipulate fire to make food. Anthropologists note this time as a significant milestone for human development and alongside fires came story telling. Neuroscientists confirm that the human brain is hardwired for story. Most importantly though, people recall and retain information more effectively when it is presented in the form of a story.
Moreover, bullet points simply do not inspire, stories do! If you must utilize visuals, opt for images to increase engagement and recall. Stories inform, illuminate, and inspire, all things great leaders strive to do.
